Dear Sophie,
I'm writing to thank you for performing during Women's Week, October
2007, in Provincetown, MA. I had never seen you in concert before but I
have always loved the passion in your music. And of course I was one of
the millions who loved "Damn..." (and still do!).
My partner and I saw you on Wednesday night at 8:30. The room was full
(at least 80 -- which was a crowd for the room). Most were women, of
course. :) You gave us lots of love in every song, and your drumming
was on fire. "Damn..." was perfect, and the women yelled for more. You
graciously signed my "Bad Kitty Board Mix" CD and I shyly told you you
were 'fabulous'; then I quietly backed away. You encouraged us to come
again to another show.
So of course I had to see you again, and I came to your show on Friday
at 5pm. I sat in the front row! You brought your adorable dog on stage,
dressed up, with you keeping the sweet pooch cuddled in your arms.
Again, you sang your heart out and your spirit filled the room. This
time you signed a "Damn..." T-Shirt for me, which I LOVE.
You were so sweet to perform during this week. I know you could get
bigger crowds elsewhere, but it means so much to have you at this event
and to have you care about those who come to Women's Week. It is a
special time for many of us who make the voyage to the tip of Cape Cod
to bond with beautiful women, to laugh, to listen to great music, and to
get lost in the sounds of the sea. But your concerts, for me, made my
week extra special, and I know this is true for all who were lucky
enough to experience one or more of your concerts that week.
Much love to you and the band and all of your pets. Take care. Rest and
paint. Within your busy schedule, take time for yourself to enjoy many
peaceful, gentle days. -Lauri

Sophie, hi!
I'm a woman named Dimitra, I'm 28 years old and I live in
Greece. I decided to write just to tell you that I'm in love
with you as a musician and as a person. I started listen to
your music when I heard "Damn" on M.T.V. and I really loved
this song. From that day I became a fan of yours and started
listen - fanatic - to your songs. My favorite one is "Damn".
Every time, sounds like the first time in my ears.......
Here comes the question:
...Will you, Sophie, visit my country for a concert? My
woman and I would give everything just to see you once live
on the stage. I would give all the world's money just to see
you standing in front of me! Think about visiting my
country. I ensure you that you'll have a great time here in
Greece.......
I wanna thank you, Sophie, for this great job that you
do. I wanna thank you for giving me your music....such an
invaluable gift!!...Thank you, for giving me your soul when
I'm alone, when I'm with friends, when I'm happy, when I'm
sad, when I'm travelling, when I make love.....
My admiration
Dimitra
P.S.1: Forgive me for my bad english
P.S.2: Hope to see you on stage someday........
|
| A |
--Dear Dimitra, it seems that I will be able to get to
Greece, it is a place that has long fascinated me. Do you
know any club owners or promoters? That's a way to get the
ball rolling. In fact, a woman named Vanessa wanted me to
come to Ireland and she asked three clubs and I went to
Ireland over easter for three shows, and now I can go back
because I've established myself there. She actually got me
press, radio, all of it. Of course, they play my songs, does
any radio station in Greece play a song of mine? If so, it's
easier. Any how, I'm sure I'll be there, I seem to get
everywhere in time. take care, see you in Greece! Sophie |

Dear Sophie,
I just bought the new CD and am so thankful that it is out
now!!! It is another amazing collection of songs. This then
inspired me to watch The Cream Will Rise again and as I
heard the songs that meant so much to me as they were heard
back when, I wept. I've been given renewed strength. I have
been dealing with breast cancer for 6 years and 'touching
base' again with your music reminded me of a simpler time
for me.
I do hope you bring your new material to the SF area...It
would be amazing to hear you live again. I saw you 2 times.
So that is my quest(ion). Will you be coming to the SF area
this summer? I sincerely hope so and I thank you for being you.
Peace,
Joanne
|
| A |
--Dear Joanne, i'm sorry to hear you are having to overcome
breast cancer, I can imagine what it must feel like to
remember when you were free of it. That something I created,
or channeled, gave you some more strength is healing to me,
because I wish I could heal you, and my music pushes me
through my blocks, it presents me with obstacles which feel
insurmountable, and eventually presents me with the way over
to a new level of being. I was in SF twice this year, at the
Cafe Du Nord and also that theatre, i forgot the name,
opening for the Coors. Please check the website, I may be
there sooner than I think, although nothing is scheduled at
the moment. Take care, Sophie |

Hello Sophie:
My name is hugo ortiz I'm from mexico and i heard your
music or first time in dawson´s creek series i just loved
it, there´s so much tender and good feelings in it, the
dawson´s series is on the air here in mexico they have been
repeating it and is a great way to feel again your music,
well you know your records are not easy to get from here but
i look at the web and find your site, it makes me happy see
you´re involved in activism and fighting for a better world
in a great way, maybe we never meet ( i think its the most
probable thing) but is pretty good to me know that around
the world are people like you and many others that take
risks in, to make love ( not in the sexual way) maybe i
should say to create love all around, send you and your
staff a great hug and lot of kisses, so many blessings in my
personal prayers...
yours in the spirit.

--Dear Hugo, what a lovely letter, thank you! I know it's
hard to get my music there, but what about Amazon or Itunes?
Anyway, if I can play in Mexico, or if you ever come to the
states, I'll give you my records at a show, how about that?
You take care and keep up with your sweet prayers, I'm glad
you're on this earth, hugs and kisses to your family and
friends. sophie |

Hi
Just wanted to say thanks for an excellent show. Dragged
along a metal-head friend who was in awe and now is a fan.
Eiren |
| A |
--Dear Eiren, I'm very impressed that you could get a
metal-head to my show, and thank the lord I made an
impression, which is strange because there were no guitar
solos. Anyhow, keep dragging those doubters. Thanks, sophie. |

Hey Sophie,
I recently saw you at the Basement in Sydney. You are such
an amazing performer and you have inspired me.
I am a performer myself but have been feeling a bit under
the weather creative wise. Even though I perform I have
never seen a concert! (until I saw you)
I just wanted to send you a message of thanks because after
seeing you with such energy and passion for what you do, I
have been reminded of what made me choose the path I have
chosen.
I am now learning to play the guitar as well!
Also thanks for signing you new CD Wilderness for me, it’s
awesome!

Eddie

--Dear Eddie, thanks for coming to the show, all I want to
do is inspire the creative fire in people. That was a really
fun show and great audience, you're welcome for the
signing, now you know how much it means and you'll sign
your fans' cds when they ask. Take care, sophie |

Sophie,
Thanks so much Sophie for being such a wonderful
performer and sharing your talent with us all! The KC
Zoo concert had to be the best concert I have ever
seen, it was so 'right there' I felt like I was being
given a private performance, my sister and I are 15
years apart and we both loved the concert!
When will you be back to KC????
|
| A |
--I loved that show, do you remember the
children who jumped on stage and played my instruments? I
adored that. I'll be back for the next record, did you know
I opened for Chris Isaak there after the Zoo fest? Any how,
I love your zoo! Thanks, Sophie |

--Dear Amy, what do you mean what do I mean, that's a very
general question. Could you be more specific? Anyhow, I
reckon you know what I mean, but you want affirmation
because the lyrics are so...unconventional. Thanks heaps for
your interest. Take care, Sophie |

Hi Sophie
I have been a fan of yours since I heard “As I Lay Me Down”
back in 1995 on the radio, then bought the double cd of
Tongues & Tails and Whaler. There are some very emotional
songs on both albums, and I listened to them a lot in the
summer (our summer here in New Zealand December to March) of
1999, when I was seeing an ex-boyfriend. Now when I listen
to either of those albums, they bring back some memories for me.
I bought the original version of “Timbre” back in 2000, then
the re-released “Timbre” in 2001. I fell in love with “Lose
Your Way” when I heard it on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack.
I sometimes feel like “The Darkest Childe”.
I still have to order your new album “Wilderness” from
Australia, as it wasn’t released here in New Zealand.
I really admire you for being a multi-talented performer.
You play keyboards and drums, amongst other unique
instruments and write and produce your own music, which must
be much more liberating for you, than having to restrict
yourself to someone else’s way of thinking.
I just read your message about you overlooking the Sydney
harbour and flying to Sydney via New Zealand (most likely
Auckland). I was so excited when I read that you passed
through my home country! I wish that you could have stopped
here for a while. If I wasn’t strapped for cash, I would
have come over to Australia to see you perform.
I don’t know if you heard through the news that here in New
Zealand we have recently had the Civil Union Bill pass and
there was a great deal of opposition to it from a cult-ish
Church group called Destiny Church. This means a great deal
for the gay & lesbian community, now they can have their
relationships recognized in the eyes of the law. This is a
link if you want to read more about it:
http://www.civilunion.org.nz/
Would you consider getting Civil Union-ed if you met the
right person for you? I would and I think I may have met
the man I have wanted for so long.
Keep the great music coming.
Ivan
|
| A |
--Dear Ivan, thanks for your letter, I don't know if I'll
ever be civil unioned or married, I've never liked the idea.
I have no problem comitting one on one in relationships, and
yet, I don't want any other influences on my relationship
but me and my significant other. I suppose that since my
partnerships are so strong in and of themselves, I dont need
validation or other people to celebrate or even be aware
them. I know the pratical reasons for partners to be legally
recognized are important, but that hasn't impacted my life
personally. Take care, Sophie. |

No matter what I am able to put in writing here, I don't
know that you will know the full extent to which your music
has been interwoven in the love that my wife and I share.
Tongues n' Tails was one of the first CDs we shared, and
since our marriage in 1996, we've had the lyrics to "True
Romance" hanging in our bedroom to remind us of the songs
that made our desire for one another into a physical being.
In fact, whenever I want to set the mood for a romantic
evening, all I have to do is put on "Whaler" or one of the
other albums and the night gets hot pretty quick. We've
adored you from afar for so long, we'd love to see you in
concert in town - any chance you'll be touring near Atlanta
any time soon? What can we do to help arrange a gig here?
Sincerely,
Mark
|
| A |
--Dear Mark, thank you so much for letting my songs into
your inspired love life. I was in Atlanta not too long ago,
and I will indeed be back again, it wasn't a big club, I
wonder if Janice remembers. At any rate, when I'm touring
for the next record, I'd love you and your's to come, just
check the website every once in awhile, we'll connect soon.
Bye for now, Sophie. |

Sophie
While talking to you after your recent show at the Glee Club
in Birmingham, and what a great show it was, you stated that
you were going to be performing at an open air show sometime
during the summer. Is there any firm dates / details for
this and what show is it? All i seem to remember is Stockton.
Best regards
Keith
PS - You signed my copy of Wilderness that evening also
writing a note for my daughter who was to young to get into
the venue, she was over the moon with the note, many thanks. |
| A |
--Dear Keith, I'm glad your daughter enjoyed the message.
It's funny you ask about that show, because the agent let
that offer slip through the cracks and now we have another
agent working on that period but we can't remember the show
either! I hope we aren't insulting the festival, we really
want to play there, but we can't find the offer...Damn! If
you remember, please let us know. Sophie |

Sophie,
The last time I saw you perform "I Want You" live was at the
Bottom Line in NYC a few years ago...and I would soooo love
to experience that again!! So I'm wondering if there's any
chance of your singing it when I see you at The Living Room
on May 24. (AND, I hope you get to play a longer set than
the last time you were there due to some curfew crappyness).
If you no longer do "I Want You," I'd be ever so happy to
hear "Lose Your Way," which, to me, is the "Sophie" "I Want
You" since you wrote it. I'm so happy you'll be back in New
York City soon!!
Thanks!
Matthew
PS: Timbre is such an awesome, soulful, beautiful piece of
peace...would love to hear as many songs from it live as
possible. Ever thought of putting out a live recording? |
| A |
--Dear Matthew, yes I'll sing I Want You at the
Living Room...will you bring as many people as possible I'll be
there? We're having a hard time promoting the show because
there's allot going on that night in NYC. And I'm doing
alot from Timbre, at least five songs from it. See you
there! Sophie. |

Hello,
Greetings from sunny Lisbon , Portugal
I'm sorry for not knowing enough of your work, but I've just
seen a video of yours with Melissa Etheridge, and I was curious, so
I'm starting to listen to your music, and to make ends meet,
I've browsed your Webpage and I saw that you are a Teckel-Dachshund lover.
I have a Teckel too, it was abandoned and the destiny
brought her to my door, I also have a labrador and a portuguese breed , all girls.
I really don't have experience with teckel breed, but after
2 weeks, I've noticed that she is the most stubborn dog that I've
ever seen. Are yours like that?
If you ever decide to come to Portugal, and have a walk on a
beach with your dogs, just mail, and I will tell you one of the best
beaches in Lisbon. Just outside my door.
If you've never been to to Lisbon, you must have. really
Take Care
Beijo
Isabel

--Dear Isabel, yes my teckel dachshund is stubborn and
imperious, and i also have a Labrador, she's my soul. I
want to come to Portugal, I'll keep your beaches in
mind...take care, sophie |

would like to see you perform. It's been along time since we
have seen someone really good. Would like to see you soon
in Colorado.

that big outdoor theatre, and I do believe I'll be back
soon, check the website this summer. Hope to see you soon.

Dear Sophie,
I just wanted to thank you for your music. It has
greatly touched my life. I have had depression since I
was in my early teens and social phobia my whole life.
Your music helped me through my teen years when I felt
depressed and isolated. Your album Whaler was
particularly therapeutic at this time. Your songs also
helped me through the times I was hospitalized for
depression. Especially the song "No Connection" from
Timbre. I first heard of you through the song "As I
Lay Me Down". It made me cry when I first heard it. It
can still make me cry today.
I saw you in concert August 16, 2001 at Copley Square
in Boston. I got your autograph. I also had a chance
to talk with you and thank you yet I felt too shy with
so many people around. I appreciate you talking with
your fans.
Love,
Kaitlin
|
| A |
--Dear Kaitlin, I feel your pain very much in this letter,
do you express your feelings through art, creativity? If
not, you must, don't hold your sadness in, bring it all to
light in a way you can talk about and share with perceptive
people. Take care, thank you for making the connection. Sophie |

Hola guapa!
What a great gig last nite at the Cyprus Avenue in
Cork! Not only you sing like a mermaid but you can
surely entertain/. Ever contemplated doing stand up
comedy? You really made me crack with your mental
comments, the pulling of your shirt and how you
wrapped it round your head ( you looked angelical),
that was ace. The intensity of your voice is still
playing in my ears and made its way to my brain, that
much that I even dreamt about you last night.
I helped your assistant put your keyboard back in the
van and today Ive got backache, dont worry, wont sue ,
all i want is some simpathy.
Ive got your fab album Wilderness which you signed for
me "damn, i wish you 'd be our road pal" and played it
back all the way home. OUTSTANDING PIECE OF
ART.
Ive got some trivial random questions for you Sophie,
which I hope you dont have to wreck your brains to
answer:
-you hit your lovely face with the microphone on
stage, did it bruised the morning after?
-what was in the pipe you puffed in once whilst on
stage? was it native american herbs?
-Did you get your waawaaa fixed , if not , how on
earth did you manage to get a new one on a bank
holiday in Ireland? ECO CHALLENGE
Thats all Sophie, it was great to see you live and to
see an artist of your calibre that is so humble and
does not seem to forget about one of the most
important thing in life>to laugh and have fun!
Adios, and see you again in Cork soon?
Your irish- argentinean roadie
Maria ( Fernanda)
|
| A |
--Hi Maria, first of all I know that musician gave you the
bulk of the weight, you think he cared about your back? I'm
surprised he lifted it at all, usually he makes my manager
lift it. Anyhow, what's in my pipe? Big secret. Was my face
bruised? probably. I'll be in Cork soon, I loved that club!
Take care, Sophie. |

| Q |
Dear Sophie,
I came across your song "Lose Your Way" one day, and fell in
love with it. I bought your Timbre CD and every time I
played your music for someone I knew, they fell in love too.
You are one of those artists that, on first listen, has a
universally recognized and stunning connection to that which
is divine.
So because I love and appreciate your music and artistry so
much, I wrote to the booking agent at Joe's pub (see below)
because the one day you are in NYC, I already have a ticket
to see/hear Sarah McLachlan perform. His reply doesn't
sound optimistic, so I thought that I would try writing to you
directly. Any chance that you will be doing other gigs in NYC
this year???....."home is where the heart is":)
Thank you for sharing your soul in your music. You are truly
an extraordinary artist.
Wishing you Wisdom, Peace and Positive Karma,
Grace
|
| A |
--Dear Grace, thanks for trying with Joe's Pub, I know Sarah
is playing that night, but I'll be in Piermont either before
or after, it's a really pretty and short drive right up the
west side highway, a beautiful town and a great club. I hope
you come to that show, check the website for details, it's
actually a very refreshing experience. Sophie |

| Q |
Hi,
I'm a long time fan. Really love your music. But, years ago
you were on
craig kilborn's show on a friday night. Four years ago,
maybe? Anyway you
played an awesome "damn i wish i was your lover", solo on
the banjo. And,
ever since then I've been looking for a recording of it. I
know its more of
a question for the forums, but they're not cooperating with
me today (the
forums themselves [not any of the members]). Do you know
where i can find a
copy of the performance?
Thanks,
ross
Austin, TeXas
|
| A |
--Dear Ross, no one has ever mentioned that performance on
the banjo, Sony was really mad at me for that...I think it's
cool that you liked it, but believe me, they burned it. Oh
well, maybe someone taped it. Thanks for bringing it up, Sophie |

| Q |
Dear Sophie
Hi from northern Japan...
In the hopes that this will be answered...
I have to confess that you haven't changed my life, but I can
say that I
love all your releases, which, as far as I can see, show how
you can mix
commercial music and integrity and come up with something
wonderful. Since
I've lived in Japan for ages, I first found you through Savior
Child, which
was included in a sampler magazine in a magazine I
subscribed to, and I
loved the track with a passion, and later came to respect your
drive not to
compromise your own ideals. Other song highlights for me
are I Want You
(which shows how to make another person's song your own
and give it
something new as well), Mr Tugboat Hello ("Your life is waiting
for you"!),
No Connection (I connected), and Lose Your Way (three
cheers for banjos).
My question for you is really simple. I gave you my song
picks, so how about
you? Of your work so far are there any songs that you can
give as
particularly good or meaningful, or even so bad that you
never want to hear
it again? I'd be really interested to hear your reply.
And if you ever tour in the north of Japan, I'll be out to see
you like a
shot!!!!!
Take care

Hi Sophie
It's great that you're touring the antipodeans, but - so close
so far! Won't you pay New Zealand a flyby visit? I'd be happy
to put up the cost of a Qantas flight over the Tasman. We'd
love to have you...
Also, thank you for finally clarifying the backing vocals from
AILMD! I set up a FAQ file for this on the alt.music.sophie-
hawkins newsgroup back in 1998. Google has old archive
copies with some of the amusing theories (believe it or not,
the taco thing goes back at least seven years):

You're an amazing musician, and an amazing person. God
bless you!

--High Mike! I can't believe I'm reading this AFTER my
Aussie tour, I stopped in New Zealand twice for about five
hours each, and had I known I could play there, believe me,
I would have. I have been infeted by your part of the world,
dare I say I'm in love with the kiwis and the Aussies, even
though you put eachother down. Listen, I'll be back, I only
buy New Zealand water now, although my favorite, New Zealand
Blue, is not sold here. So, lets make a date for later, you
are the original Cracker, and I'm gratefull that you emailed
that fateful day and janice told me what you wrote and I got
inspired to go wild. Take care, thanks for the information.

Hi i'm Nicola from Italy...recently i watched 40 days
40 nights containing one of your songs, "the one you
have not seen". As i wanted to listen other songs of
yours, i bought the album Timbre but "the one you have
not seen" of the album is not the same version of the
movie: there are some different musical elements
(especially in the intro) and when a particular
melody catches my mind i go crazy until i find it
again so that i can listen to it further and further,
i don't know how to explain, i hope you
understand....so where can i find this song in the
same version of the movie? does it exist or it's a
remake done only for the movie?
thanks, Nicola
|
| A |
--Dear Nicola, no one has ever asked me about the movie
version of this song, and I scored the opening, and the
orgasm part differently for the scene. I wish I could send
you a copy, but I'd have to look, maybe I will find time
after this next tour. It's not for sale anywhere, I dont
think the movie had a soundtrack...oh well, we'll see. Thank
you so much for your interest. sophie |

Dear Sophie,
Want to help in whatever way I can to expose more people to
your music, and hopefully through it come to know you as
one amazing and inspirational human being. Saw you at
Earth Day in Nashville last summer (I was
the one who had picked up trash that morning, prior to
coming to the celebration and got
your autograph). What a great day! Had seen you earlier in
Memphis at the Germantown PAC (sorry about the sound
person and the obnoxious woman who
kept bothering you). Thought you were a true professional
through it all and loved hearing you talk off the cuff that
night. Regretted that I could
not follow you on to Knoxville after your Nashville
appearance, but had other plans and did not want you to
think I was some weird stalker type fan.
Ha! Ha!
Anyhoo...I write to ask for your insight into what stations on
XM satellite radio might be the best channels for promoting
your latest CD and other work. Have a wonderful holiday
season and blessings to you.
Namaste,
Catherine
|
| A |
--Dear Catherine, thanks for your feedback on that show, and
I loved earth day in Nashville, we have great video footage
from there. I'm not sure about which stations on xm
satellite, I just got mine together, so i'd actually love
your opinion on that. Take care, Sophie |

Dear Sophie,
Hi! I began listening to your music in the early 90's and had
the awesome opportunity to see you perform in Dallas, TX at
Deep Ellum Live in 1993. I think I've worn out 2-3 CD's of
Tongues and Tails by now - it's really the best! I was excited
to pick up a copy of Wilderness and your greatest hits CD's
recently - both are wonderful. I was sad to see that "We Are
One Body" didn't make it on your greatest hits CD! What's up
with that? I think it's the sexiest song I've ever heard! My
favorite line of the song is when you say " come on make
love to exclusion" - it's so perfect!
We'd love to have you back in Dallas to perform! Any chance
you'll be in Texas soon?
Happy holidays!

--Dear Amy, thanks for picking out that line, and I'll be in
Austin and Houston this summer, if you can make any of those
dates. Take care, sophie |

Hello Sophie --
I would love to know: when you were a child, what did you
always pretend to be when you played? What did you want to
be when you were growing up? Also: boxers and t-shirt or
lingerie ?
LOVE LOVE LOVE your music--thank you for sharing.
Come to Dallas soon. I'll take you to dinner.

--Dear Judith, boxers and t shirt, or bust. I wanted to be a
weather man, I also wanted to be a teacher of literature
when I was in sixth grade. I wanted to be a drummer very
badly, and that's what I became. These are fun questions!
Now I want to be a painter, but I can't pull myself away
from music. I also read national Geographic cover to cover
and dream of being a natural scientist. Take care, I'll be
in Texas this summer if you check the website. Sophie |
