Hello Sophie. I am thrilled to have such an opportunity to have a moment to ask you a question. First off, I can't even begin to express to you how much your music has meant to me and the support and ethereal voice it has been for me during my darkest moments when I feel as though I cannot find the words to express what I'm feeling. And listening to your songs along with the music it's like singing in the car with a friend who understands. Well, this brings me to my question.
My favorite album has got to Timbre. I remember listening to it at the music store when it was initially released. I remember hiding my face when I was listening to I Walk Alone. It struck such a chord that I actually began to cry. One of my favorite songs though is Traveling Light. Truly gorgeous and spiritual. When I listen to your music your songs are delivered with such clarity and poignance and brutal honesty. As a composer and songwriter myself I have such difficulty forming my thoughts into actual words that I feel convey in-depth emotion. Sometimes after writing lyrics I sit down and reread them and still feel as though I did not capture the true essence of any given personal experience. As a songwriter, what process do you take in order to bring forth such strong emotions in your songs and music.
Thank you so much for being who you are. Your music is inspiring and simply amazing. Keep on doing what you're doing. I am impatiently awaiting your new CD.
Sincerely,
Your supportive fan,
Jason-Todd G.
San Antonio, Texas
Any chance you will be in the Texas area for Tour dates?
|
| A |
Dear Jason-Todd G., do you ever write a song to someone, say what you've never been able to say without music? I feel the music opens the channel to the truth, and I write each song like a letter that I'm sending to God.
First, send it to your highest self to let angels carry your song to the purest ears, to the purest heart.
You can do what you need to do in your song, You have the ability. Must be patient because spiritual revelations come when they come. You'll be there. Take Care. You moved me a lot.
Thanks, Sophie

| Q |
Hi,
Well first my question would be, do you have any idea when or where in the Pacific Northwest I could see you perform again? The reason for the question is this, I saw you for the first time on June 15th, 2003 in Portland at the Pride festival. I guess I have been living in a bubble for quite some time because I truly had No idea who you were; I had heard your name before but I had no idea where or why and I didn't know your music, I had heard "Damn I wish I was your Lover" and "As I lay me down" and I Loved both of those songs but I didn't know you were the one who wrote and sang them........That's probably a really bad thing to say to someone and I feel terrible about that........Most of the music I listen too doesn't get played on the radio, it's mostly female singer songwriters and some male singer songwriters. Most the stuff on the radio, I hear by accident when I'm at work or riding in someone else's car; at home it's all of my CD's of my favorite artists. I am really bummed that it has taken me this long to finally put your name with your music.........I Loved your show and I think your music is wonderful and very powerful. I wish I could have talked to you more at the show and there were just so many people behind me waiting to see you that all I could say was Thank-you, and I want to thank-you now for coming to Portland and sharing yourself and your music. I had a great time and now that I know who you are I can update my CD collection to include you and your music....I started that update at the festival but I have some catch up to do yet. I Look forward to your newest CD release and seeing you perform live again.with much respect and admiration,
Michael Portland Oregon
|
| A |
Dear Michael, actually, the best thing for me to hear is that you've never heard of me before because it lets me know that everytime I'm out there, it is a chance to connect to someone. Thank you so much! |

| Q |
Hi Sophie,
I saw your concert in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1995 - one of the best concerts I've ever been to. As far as I know, you haven't been giving any concerts in Denmark since then. Why?? When are you going to give a concert in Denmark again? If you're not, then when are you touring in the north of Germany?
I'm really looking forward to hearing your new album, and hope so much to see you live soon.
Lots of kisses from an old Danish fan, Rikke Gawinski. |
| A |
The why is not for lack of desire...it's the industry. I have a hard time - but not for long. I just read a great article in The Economist about Denmark. I'll be there soon. |
| |
| Q |
Sophie,
I wondered this after I saw THE CREAM WILL RISE.
You alway talk about "just knowing" you wanted to play drums.
I think of drums as being very primal and basic...
so, do you think in some way the drums helped you become more of a force in
your family dynamics. Like saying..."This is my voice...I am here...this is
me...this is who I am" ...? or do you think your great desire to be a
musician helped you get passed the isolation of your childhood?
Thanks,
Cookie |
| A |
Both are true. And it's the same now. I'm a modern primitive. |

| Q |
Hi Sophie,
Before I ask my question, just to let you know how
much respect and admiration I have for you and your
work (both music and environmental). Thank you for
writing 'Bare the weight of me', It is the most
beautiful song I have ever heard. Your music and your
opinions constantly inspire me to look at things in a
whole new way.
Basically, you are fab! Please dont stop.
Now for my question:
It was such a shame that Timbre wasn't released here
in Europe and I was wondering if there are any plans
for a European release of the new album? Believe me,
you have so many fans and potential fans here. I have
converted many :o) I think because your style is so
ecclectic that it appeals to so many different kinds
of people. I mean even my granny is crazy about
'Walking in my blue jeans'!
I'd be willing to help with promotion.
Also, come to Ireland! You would love it :o)

I was listening to Timbre and still think it's the hottest CD i own.
I am really interested in purchaseing your new recording and I would like to know where I could purchase it or whether I would purchase online. It would be great! Keep in mind mind, I live in Vancouver, Canada and just because I am Canadian Citizen and our Prime Minster didn't help out in the Iraqi War, doesn't mean I am not behind the Americans. I'd be happy if we could all join as one. Still my favorite song to this day is, "I Walk Alone", still the story of my life and i just wished i had some talent like you that I was able to do something about it.
Your still my favorite artist and when are you you going to come and play at General Motors Place or the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for us Vancouverites!!! I'd be in the front screaming!
Sincerely,
Heather

Hi Sophie,
I met you at the Voices of Women concert in Moorpark. I was so intent on thanking you for all of your music that I forgot to ask...Is there a reason you don't do more concerts near Los Angeles or Santa Barbara? I live in San Luis Obispo, a lovely town just waiting for a visit from you!
Love,
Sheree |

I will be touring in September, thanks for asking. See you soon! |

| Q |
Dear Sophie, i'm 51 years old and have been playing guitar and singing
for 38 years. I never really played full time. Always worked another job
etc. I've had a lot of accidents and operations in my time, and had my
second back surgery last year, and now they say due to my back i have to
go on social security disability. I consider myself blessed with having
a good voice, play a decent guitar, and am able to write songs. My
question is one that you will probably say only i can answer, but i
thought maybe you can give me some insight. By me going on soc. sec. it
may be a blessing in disguise. I feel now i will have time to
concentrate solely on my music. I had played part time doing solo gigs
while i worked but never felt i was going anywhere. I take this
seriously, because there is something inside of me i can't explain that
tells me God put me here to do my music. I don't want to sound as if i'm
bragging when i tell you for years people have heard me play and ask why
i'm not making records. I know how tough the business is, and know now
it will take a lot of work for me to pursue my dreams, because of my
physical condition. I would love to be able to play every night and
tour, but i doubt if my health will allow me to do this now. Plus beIng
realistic, i don't see too many people wanting to come out to see a 50
year old man, with a pot belly on stage. But theres something about you,
that after i saw the special about you on cable that gave me a spiritual
uplift, and made me feel i could still do it. Is there any room for some
one like me in todays music business or have i missed my boat? People
tell me that if Jackson Browne, C,S,N,Y, and so many more my age or
older can do it so can i. But they have been in the spot light for so
long, people know them. Sophie, i really don't know what i'm trying to
say or ask you here. Maybe just a vote of confidence from a lady i feel
i know, and respect. Maybe i can just write music, get some songs out,
and see where it takes me from there. I hear you have to pay your dues.
I may not of played full time for a living, but i feel i've paid my dues
playing in all sorts of bars, clubs, restaurants, and dives over the
past 38 years. I guess i just want to know is their still a glimmer of
hope for someone like me? I so much want my music to be heard by others.
I believe they deserve to hear it. I trust you and your insight and
just need to honestly know if you think i have a shot or should i retire
my guitar (except for myself) and except the fact i'm getting too old,
theres too much competition, and to forget about it. Knowing you you'll
probably say with me thinking like that i will never make it, but i
don't think or believe that. Just bringing it up as others mat think.
Please let me know Sophie. My mind and spirit are still young. A good
friend of mine Sarah Fleischer at 98 rock here in Baltimore (I'm so
sorry i missed you at the Rams Head in Annapolis, but wasn't financially
able to swing it since i haven't received my first disability check yet)
tells me i'll never grow up, but loves me the way i am and not to
change. I know this is a strange request letter, but when i saw i had a
chance to write you i just had to. I love your music, your voice, and
your out look on life. Hope to hear from you,and hope to see you some
day. May God always smile upon you and yours, and that you will always
have the gift to inspire and touch others, as you have deeply touched
me. Deep peace,~ Dutch

Dear Ed, all you need to do is make your cd. There are so many ways to get it out there if you're committed. Don't EVER give up on yourself. Dont be held back by any thoughts, the world needs us to be the example that everyone can break through. |
| |
| Q |
Well, the question isn't so much a "burning" one....but I was just wondering.....
Hi Sophie,
Have you read much by e.e. cummings?
See, I've been trying to come up with a way to describe your music. To me anyway. And, I'm not nearly as tall as you and Gigi are (really, I've met both of you, you're both quite tall actually), so maybe my opinion doesn't much matter anyway. It's okay. :-)
But, I've listened to "You Turn Me On" and it's the same as
"And it's Spring when the world is puddle wonderful
The goat footed balloonman whistles far....
And wee......"
And you seemed to get that in that interview when you said that "Walking In My Blue Jeans" was like a Saturday morning when you were a kid.
Saturday mornings in New York City must make your head explode. :-)))
I like that you get that.
And in the interview you did for that radio station in New York where you talk about dreams --
"We and worlds are less alive than dolls and dream...."
That's a poem that e.e. cummings wrote about his friend Dominic Depaola. I wish I could find the whole thing right now.
So, since everything's connected -- I was just wondering about you and e. e. cummings.
Anyway -- don't feel bad that "Beautiful Girl" didnt' come out so great live on that radio show. But...do feel bad that I only have that little clip to listen to so far! LOL! No, I know you're trying. I'm kidding.
Please come back to Massachusetts soon - I need more music and I think there are more dogs who need homes.
Oh, and if you pick this question, I'd be interested in hearing the answer.
Thanks.
Carolyn

| A |
Dear Carolyn, I've only read the Puddle wonderful from when I was in high school - I remember falling in love with those laughing words, I remember feeling "This is true, this is the way nature talks to us".
Now I'm in love again and I'm going to buy E.E. Cummings because I don't have it with me. Ugh, that N.Y.
radio show nearly made me kill myself but the tour was very good after that. It is interesting that you picked up on "You Turn Me On". There is a song on the album called "Blue" which is in the tradition of childmind nature speak and I think you'll appreciatete. Thank you |

I would just like to commend Sophie on being such an AMAZING artist and
singer of all the cds I have of different artists Sophie is the only one
whom I can listen to from beginning to end all 3 cds when I listen to one of
them I listen all the way through there so full of passion. Anyhow my
question is how much longer do her fans have to wait to hear the new CD.
When I saw Sophie in concert at the culture room in Fort Lauderdale and she
told me that she wanted me to E-mail the website when I heard the song
Adrian that she wrote since my name is Adrian and I would love to hear the
song and the rest of the new album. I also have one more question regarding
her videos im aware Sophie isn't part of Columbia anymore but I wish there
was a collection of her videos because she is so beautiful and her videos
feel so fresh maybe there can be a collection package made of them.

Dear Adrian
If the cd doesn't come out soon eough, maybe we'll put a clip of Adrian on the website, about the videos, sony probably destroyed them. They destroyed all pics

| Q |
Sophie B. Hawkins, in "Help Me Breath," wrote about a woman who may be
interpreted as being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse/incest. This song
alludes by reference to Virginia Woolf's book, To the Lighthouse, in which
the character, Cam Ramsey, is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse/incest.
In turn, the Virginia Woolf character, Cam Ramsey, listens to the book,
Antiquary by Sir Walter Scott, read to her by her father. In Antiquary, a
main character, Evelina Neville, is strongly affected by her experiences of
incest. (In fact, Virginia Woolf's real father. Leslie Stephen, read
Antiquary to Virginia Woolf and her siblings when she was a child.)
The influence of each of these writers/artists on the next is clearly
significant.
My question to Sophie is:
How important is it to have the artistic impressions or voices of others
about similar experiences of abuse? And in particular, how has the work of
Virginia Woolf helped you personally and creatively? And how would you like
for your work to help/affect others?
Mary NJ, USA
|
| A |
You are very clear and perceptive and you have really made me happy in your observations. I read "To the Lighthouse" when I was 14, and yes I am alluding to V. Woolf. She guided me then and, and has often throughout my life. If my work could validate another human being who is suffering from the murderous affects of incest and sexual abuse, I would feel my work is worth the struggle to get out there. Somehow creativity has a truth that cuts through where nothing else can. In a way I owe V. Woolf my life, because I decided to believe myself and follow my instincts when I read "to the lighthouse", and it changed the direction of my very self destructive life. It is truly elegant that you made this connection and I will not forget that through our work - yours - mine - V. Woolf etc. - we are commuunicating, healing, listening, loving.
Thank you,
Sophie |

Sophie,
I wanted to thank you for performing out here in my neck of the woods. I just found out that on March 12, 2004, you are coming to the Lancaster Performing Arts Center. And minutes ago I bought my ticket, front row seat # 10. Look for me Okay, I'll be the one smiling ear to ear saying "I can't believe I finally get to see her!" I've been such a fan of yours over the years but this will be the fist chance I've had to see you perform live. I'm excited and can't wait! Your music touches something in my soul. I work nights and you are with me nightly as I drive this city. I'm eager to here the new CD. the track Beautiful Girl sounds great, very Sophieish! Did I here a piece of that song on The Cream Will Rise Doc? Thought I did. Do you know yet when the CD will hit the stores? Hey Sophie I'd love to be able to give you a little something the night you perform, Do you have a favorite flower? Its not much, but I'd like to be able to say thank you for all the lovely songs you have shared with us over the years. I think you are beautiful and I would do anything to have as much hair as you have! Its gorgeous! Your soul takes my breath away!
Thank you,
Shelly

Dear Shelly, lilacs are my favorite flower, but they are seasonal. I love honeysuckle and jasmine, I love those little white snowballs on the curbs in clusters that smell like tea w/milk and honey.
I love all wild flowers, I am in heaven when I walk by junk yards and old patches of forgotten land and see wild flowers growing. |
