Musings From Sophie

Sophie’s Holiday Greeting

Dear friends, people of the light,

On this night of the snowy N’oreaster I am thinking of going into hibernation before the New Year, but not before I thank you so much for being with me, reaching out and teaching me that I am so far from being alone and unheard. Thank you for reading my blogs, coming to my shows, watching my videos, buying some merchandise, and interacting on my social media pages.

I am an independent artist, as many of you are… a single parent, as many of you may be or feel like you are, and the isolation of COVID-19 could have been much scarier, would have been, without you. Thank you for joining me, collaborating, and truly supporting my work. I can feel you, I can see you, we are a community.

I also wanted to share a thought or two avalanched by my mother after my living room concert on December 12. Over the phone I said, “Did you hear my mistakes?” And she said, “Our mistakes are our admissions.” Admissions… what one admits about one’s self, and admissions, being let in to the deeper, more fulfilling realm of living.

“You use your mistakes creatively,” she said.  We stumble upon the truth. If we didn’t stumble, we’d keep plodding in the same uninspired direction.

I had been thinking about the Oscar Wilde quote – “giving good advice is fatal” – and it dawned on me that following advice has nothing to do with blazing your trail. We must get off the beaten path prescribed by others in order to be admitted into true creativity. Your soul’s desire.

COVID-19 has taken both such a dire toll, and also given us so much opportunity to reassess. If COVID hadn’t happened, I’m not sure humanity on this planet would be better off, as a whole. I’m so grateful there is a vaccine, and I’m also grateful for the challenges and deep growth this time of COVID has given me. It took both good and bad away and left us with unfamiliar choices; this is life. We couldn’t possibly have it all figured out. It’s creative. It’s as if being faced with the present, we realize we live much in the past, executing old ideas, steeped in over used notions. “Mistakes are our admissions.” Right on, Mummy!

I also wanted to share my rendition of Silent Night with you. You can see my holiday greeting ‘card’ and listen on my YouTube channel.

Happy holidays and a peaceful, much-deserved, New Year!

Your faithful songwriter,

Sophie B. Hawkins

    Dear Sophie,

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter–tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther….And one fine morning ——”

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

    (F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Great Gatsby”)

  7. LBW says:

    Dear Sophie,
Is it hibernation if it is the rejuvination
that happens at the side of a fire , brightened by hot chocolate
    warmed with whispers of songs,
stories of the ancestors sung as secrets para tus ninos
inspired by dreams not yet imagined, between their’s and your’s
being sure to let your child spirit capture some snow angels under the midnight stars and the waning moon.
Inhale the new year certain of the perfection that is you.

Damn, it’s amazing how even after childhood’s doubts our mothers can get it so right! Hopefully we gift that back to our own kids.
    Peace and Light,
    LBW
